So it is no wonder that some of the newest brands for ethical fashion have been created. In a market saturated with copycats and knock-offs, these designers have taken the first step in breaking the chain of supply chain corruption that has plagued the apparel industry.
Halima Sultana was inspiring to create Halima. When her daughter was diagnosed with cancer, she decided to take a stand against sweatshops. “My daughter’s struggle motivated me to create a brand that I hoped would be an inspiration to women everywhere,” says Sultana. The idea came to her in an odd way: as she was on a trip to China. “I saw women in designer dresses sitting by the Riverside, with their feet up, chatting away merrily about what had caught their eye, and how they could have made more money,” she says.
“That image stuck in my mind and I started thinking about the impact that poor clothing could have on a woman’s dignity,” she recalls. Then she noticed a similar brand, called Halima Design, which had already opened in New York City. And she knew she had to have a similar line before others could beat her to the streets.
Sultana wanted a line that incorporated some of the latest fabrics and technologies, so she took the time to study the subject and designed products that use high quality materials and designs. “We want to create clothes that appeal to those who care about the social and environmental impacts of fashion,” she explains.
Halima is a natural blend of comfort and style. “When I shop, I usually pick up a scarf and then go straight to the cleaners to choose a new pair of shoes or skirts,” says Sultana. In fact, her business partners are all designers who focus on more expensive items.
Halima is now available online and will soon be launched in the US. “The consumer is a different type of person today, so we need to offer products that appeal to them,” says Sultana. “But we want our clothes to be available for everybody.”
The company is run by four women, all with a background in fashion, and all with an active design team. “We also have a second design team working in the factory making products every day, every hour,” adds Sultana. They have designs for all sorts of styles, from casual dress to womenswear.
The founders want to raise funds for research into the health problems that garment workers have to contend with, and will donate 10% of profits to a charity that supports the causes of workers. Some of the cash raised will go to the Bangladeshi government to help improve the working conditions there. Others will go to the four designers’ wages and benefits.
Each of the four designers has a design label, and Halima will also have a separate collection, with designs by each of them. This has been very helpful, especially with the fact that each of the four designers have different approaches to design. For example, Pertu Gopalakrishnan has an Indonesian flair, while Khadija Saeed-Saleh hails from Pakistan, and Mahina Gajic is a curator of vibrant colors.
All of the suppliers for Halima, including the fabrics, polishes, and sewing machines, are established suppliers. Each has verified its compliance with the Fair Labor Association and the Responsible Clothing Initiative, an initiative to protect workers in developing countries.
Halima is already available on the runway at the Marie Claire fashion show in New York City. “We wanted to present the brand in a way that was highly visible but still understated,” says Sultana. “It will also offer something a little bit different for those who aren’t comfortable wearing designer clothes, like they’re already used to.”
