Sleep paralysis is a sleep disorder in which an individual experiences sudden and persistent loss of consciousness while asleep. An individual may lose consciousness during the transition from wakefulness to sleep. This can also be caused by a sudden temporary lack of oxygen supply, some drugs, medications, or alcohol consumption.

Sleep paralysis is considered to be a very real condition and is more common than most people realize. It is a serious problem for many sufferers. Most medical professionals believe that this condition occurs when the person’s brain does not communicate with the muscles that are functioning in the sleeper’s body. The fact that many times people do not remember what happens during the episode of sleep paralysis indicates that the patient was probably not aware of his or her actions.

These may include the perception of being unable to breathe, hyperventilation, feelings of suffocation, and even panic. The occurrences of these episodes may also vary in intensity, occurring only for a brief moment or lasting for many minutes.

Some people who have occasional episodes of sleep disorder do not experience these episodes at all. It is not uncommon for these individuals to report that they had a dreamless sleep and that they woke up soon after.
