Kundalini Yoga meditation is often linked with the Sanskrit word “kundalini”. What is this all about? What is the connection between Kundalini Yoga and the ancient Indian belief in a serpent-like entity that resides in the base of the spine? This article will try to answer these questions.
Although very few people are aware of it, the Hindu and Indian beliefs in the serpent may be at the root of the Kundalini Yoga practices. According to Hindu tradition, it was Brahma (God of creation) who created a snake which resides at the base of the spine. While it was initially believed that the serpent is always born from the mind, it later on became a sleeping serpent, meaning a conscious entity.
This serpent or god creates an imbalance in the human body. For the Indian yogis, this serpent represents the cycle of birth and death. When this serpent awakens, the Indian yogis strive to become pure, that is, to balance their body and mind. The idea behind Kundalini Yoga is to awaken this serpent and give it the opportunity to merge into the crown chakra at the base of the skull.
After awakening the serpent, the yogis attempt to redirect its energy to other areas of the body by letting it out of the body through meditation. Then, they practice that they can purify their mind and body from karmic actions by purifying the serpent through meditation. They also try to channel the serpent’s energy to other parts of the body.
While there is some overlap between the Kundalini Yoga and Indian Vedic beliefs, it is important to realize that the physical body is not the object of this practice. Only the serpent resides at the base of the spine.
This is the reason why Kundalini yoga classes are usually called “serpent yoga classes”. Therefore, Kundalini Yoga classes do not refer to any form of ancient science; rather, they refer to a particular practice.
It is important to remember that the Kundalini Yoga movement was not founded by kundalini experts. Instead, it emerged from specific guru traditions.
If you are still confused about what the original meaning of Kundalini Yoga is, consider that it is just another term for yogic meditation. Though it was originally called “yogic meditation”, it was changed into this word because of the popularity of the western term “yoga”.
After the rise of this western term, many westerners came to India to learn the ancient techniques of meditation and yoga from the legendary Indian yogis. Soon, yoga and meditation were both translated as “yogic meditation”. Kundalini Yoga was not part of this new terminology and thus, was not included in the original book of yoga, the Gita.
When you are looking for Kundalini Yoga classes, make sure that you ask your teacher if he/she has experience in the Kundalini yoga. Also, ask him/her about the specific conditions that he/she would recommend for students.
When you are practicing the Kundalini yoga, you need to work on being more concentrated. You should use the same meditation practice that the yogis used hundreds of years ago.
It is important that you practice everyday. Remember that in the end, you want to concentrate on eliminating your energy blockages in order to bring your spiritual body back to its original shape.
